About

Greetings from Denmark and welcome to Playing History, the blog for random history bits and historical miniature war gaming.

I am history nerd, no way around it. I simply love all things history but it must be noted that I often take a different approach to history as I am by no means a historian. I am an engineer by training and a miniature war gamer before a historian. I therefore admire real historians who spend days and weeks digging through all the source materials to find the facts. I will try to convey some of all the things I read as truthfully as possible but occasionally I will get something wrong, I may misread or mishear things and I therefore implore you to always check my source materials for yourselves.

The blog is meant for entertainment and sparking interest in history not to be historical documentation. It is my hope that this blog will help convey some of my passion for learning history and inspire others to dig into topics normally too specialized or complex to be conveyed in schools.

My Wargaming History

I started out as a Warhammer Fantasy player for my first taste of war gaming being at that time the most popular in my hometown. I was at that time quite a competitive tournament player. From there I went into a few other games but nothing really managed to hold my attention so I started playing PC games. I then came across Flames of War and I have slowly migrated towards historical gaming where I can combine my love of history with my passion for wargaming.

These days I am more interested in creating scenarios and what-if history, while originally I was tournament player and very competitive, but I have learned to enjoy war gaming more as a social event and where I loved the strict/streamlined rule systems but over time I have developed an interest for the social aspects which has recently got me into Black Powder.

I am however not the all embracing type of war gaming, I hate painting and modelling and thus it may seems strange that I do not stick with PC games but the social aspects in it and the ability to be creative with scenarios and trying to build fair games is something PC games cannot offer.

I currently play:

Flames of War (www.flamesofwar.com)

Black Powder (http://www.warlordgames.com/home/black-powder/)

In addition to writing my own rulesets, add-ons and scenarios.

I am also looking at Bolt Action but I have yet to dive into it. I am very undecided if I should go for another WWII game.

Hope to see you on the battlefields.

UPDATE – HEMA

I have more recently started HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) and have been fencing rapier and saber for about 9 months and have started looking at the long sword as well. I train with the Copenhagen Historical Fencing Club and I found a sport that I enjoy having otherwise been the pale office worker. I greatly recommend anyone to give it a try, I believe with historical, thecnical and social aspects, it could be interesting for most people.
